The amount of exemption applicants receive will depend on their tax liability owed to South Carolina residents for the 2021 tax year.

If a resident's tax liability is less than $800, the exemption amount is to equal the tax liability.

Anyone whose tax liability exceeds $800 will be paid exactly $800.

This tax exemption will be made available to all South Carolina residents who file their 2021 taxes by February 15.

Payment of this exemption will be issued in March of this year.

Those who are able to avail this exemption may not get an amount equal to their tax liability if they have an outstanding personal income tax bill with the department. This outstanding amount will be deducted from that exemption amount.
